The Society was founded as ‘The Friends of Uruguay’ in 1945, to cement historic ties between the two countries which were strengthened during the Second World War. In 1961 the name was changed to ‘The British-Uruguayan Society’ and in 1978 BUS became a registered charity. Its aims are to advance the education of Britons about Uruguay and of Uruguayans about Britain, to provide financial support to Uruguayan educational institutions which cater largely for underprivileged children and to help students both in Uruguay and in Britain who want to learn more about either country. The Society is able to achieve these aims by raising money from three core annual events: the Asado (barbecue), the Summer Concert and the Christmas party, and also from lectures, seminars and exhibitions as well as donations and annual subscriptions. In addition the Society co-operates with the Anglo-Latin American Foundation in fundraising activities in aid of the children of Latin America. The Society publishes a twice-yearly journal, El Hornero (named after the oven bird, whose distinctive spherical mud nest is a common sight in the Uruguayan countryside), with news and articles of interest to all connected with Uruguay. The Society is a corporate member of the Hispanic and Luso- Brazilian Council, at whose headquarters, Canning House, in Belgrave Square, many of its meetings take place. BIENVENIDO A LA SOCIEDAD BRITÁNICO-URUGUAYA La Sociedad se fundó en Londres en 1945 con el nombre de ‘Amigos del Uruguay’ para cimentar los fuertes lazos históricos existentes entre ambos países, vínculos que se consolidaron durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En 1961 cambió su nombre a ‘Sociedad Británico-Uruguaya’ y en 1978 fue registrada como institución benéfica con los siguientes cometidos: promover el conocimiento del Uruguay en Gran Bretaña y el de Gran Bretaña en el Uruguay, brindar apoyo a organizaciones uruguayas que trabajan en el campo de la educación de niños socialmente vulnerables y ofrecer ayuda a estudiantes de cualquiera de los dos países que quieran profundizar en su conocimiento del otro. Para cumplir con tales fines la Sociedad tradicionalmente organiza tres eventos anuales con el objeto de recaudar fondos: un asado, un concierto al aire libre y una fiesta navideña. Cuenta asimismo con ingresos provenientes de suscripciones y donaciones y de la organización de conferencias, seminarios y exposiciones. La Sociedad también es miembro de la Fundación Anglo-Latinoamericana, con la cual colabora en actividades de recaudación de fondos en beneficio de los niños de Latinoamérica, y del Consejo Hispano-Luso-Brasileño, en cuya sede del centro de Londres (Canning House) celebra muchas de sus reuniones. La Sociedad publica una revista bianual llamada El Hornero (nombre del pájaro cuyo nido de barro es tan característico de la campiña uruguaya) con noticias y artículos de interés para todo aquél que tenga vínculos con Uruguay.
