Vice-president : John Brian Hunt
I trained as a chartered accountant and worked in that capacity all my working life. I am now retired. In the early sixties my wife and I went to Uruguay, where I was employed as chief accountant to Alpargatas S.A., a textile firm. That experience founded my interest in that delightful country and when I came across the book 'Tales of Uruguay’ in the Canning bar of my club in London I joined the British Uruguayan Society. I was soon co-opted to the committee and later became vice-chairman serving with a number of chairmen. I was elected chairman myself on the tragic death of the then chairman Eric Vine, a past British Ambassador to Uruguay. As a vice-president of the Society I continue to take a keen interest in its progress and functions.

Estudié la carrera de contador público y ejercí esta profesión a lo largo de toda mi vida laboral, de la cual estoy ahora retirado. Al comienzo de la década de los sesenta viajé con mi esposa a Uruguay para trabajar como jefe de contaduría de la empresa textil Alpargatas S.A. Con esta experiencia nació mi interés en este precioso país. En el bar Canning de mi club de Londres cayó un día en mis manos el libro ‘Tales of Uruguay’ y decidí entonces hacerme socio de la Sociedad Británico - Uruguaya. Al poco tiempo fui invitado a formar parte del comité y posteriormente fui elegido vicepresidente ejecutivo, habiendo trabajando con varios presidentes. Tras la trágica muerte de Eric Vine, a la sazón presidente ejecutivo y antiguo embajador británico en Uruguay, fui elegido presidente. Como vicepresidente honorario de la Sociedad, mantengo un vivo interés en el desarrollo de sus actividades.

Vice-president : Jill Quaife
I was secretary to Sir Eugen Millington-Drake (British Minister to Uruguay 1934-41 and founding president of the Society) from 1960 until he died in1972. Subsequently I worked for other members of his family, read history at London University and was company secretary of The Chemical Dependency Centre Ltd., from 1985 until 2007. I became secretary of the Society in 1967 and made four long visits to Uruguay with Sir Eugen in the 1960s and 70s. In 2006 I married Armando Rigamonti, a very old friend and a long-serving Committee member of the Society. Sadly he died ten days after our marriage. We had always hoped to make a sentimental visit to Uruguay, and in March 2008 I did go back. I retired as secretary of the Society in June 2008 and was elected vice-president in January 2009.

Fui secretaria de Sir Eugen Millington-Drake (ministro británico en Uruguay entre 1934 y 1941 y presidente fundador de la Sociedad) desde 1960 hasta su fallecimiento en 1972. Posteriormente trabajé para otros miembros de su familia, hice estudios de historia en la Universidad de Londres y fui secretaria del directorio de The Chemical Dependency Centre Ltd. desde 1985 hasta 2007.
En 1967 asumí el rol de secretaria de la Sociedad Británico-Uruguaya. Durante las décadas de los sesenta y setenta realicé cuatro largas visitas a Uruguay junto con Sir Eugen. En 2006 me casé con Armando Rigamonti, un viejo amigo que había integrado el comité de la Sociedad durante muchos años. Lamentablemente Armando falleció diez días después de nuestra boda. En marzo de 2008 yo cumplí nuestro sueño de hacer una visita sentimental a Uruguay. En junio del mismo año me retiré como secretaria de la Sociedad y en enero de 2009 fui elegida vicepresidenta honoraria.

I was born in Uruguay and started architectural studies in the Facultad de Arquitectura in Montevideo. Thereafter I completed a Master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in the United States. Upon marrying my English-born wife, Linda, I settled in the United Kingdom, where I qualified as an architect. I have been working as an architect in London for the last thirty years and I am currently European Chairman of a major London-based architectural practice.
I have an abiding interest in Uruguayan culture and I visit the country regularly.

Nací en Montevideo y empecé mis estudios universitarios en la Facultad de Arquitectura de Montevideo. Posteriormente cursé una maestría en la Universidad de Minnesota en los Estados Unidos. Tras mi casamiento con Linda, inglesa de nacimiento, me radiqué en el Reino Unido, donde obtuve el título de arquitecto. Llevo treinta años ejerciendo esta profesión en Londres, siendo actualmente director de la división europea de un importante estudio de arquitectos con sede en la capital del Reino Unido.
Mantengo desde siempre un vivo interés en la cultura de mi país natal y viajo a él con frecuencia.

Vice-Chairman: Tristan Millington-Drake
I have been vice – chairman of the Society since 2005. My father, Jim Millington-Drake, was chairman of the Society from 1978 until 1983 and my grandfather, Sir Eugen Millington-Drake, British Minister at Montevideo 1934-1941, was a founding member of the Society (then known as ‘The Friends of Uruguay’) in 1945 and its first president.
My early career was in shipping. In 1985 I founded The Chemical Dependency Centre Ltd., a charity to help sufferers from alcohol and drug addiction, and I was its Chief Executive until 2007 when I merged it with two other charities. I am now Principal Consultant to the new charity.
I took my sons to Uruguay in 2000 to show them part of their family heritage.

Soy vicepresidente ejecutivo de la Sociedad desde 2005. Mi padre, Jim Millington-Drake, fue presidente honorario de la misma entre 1978 y 1983 y mi abuelo, Sir Eugen Millington-Drake, ministro británico en Montevideo desde 1934 hasta 1941, fue uno de los fundadores de la Sociedad (conocida entonces como ‘Amigos del Uruguay’) y su primer presidente honorario. Mi vida laboral se inició en el ámbito del transporte marítimo. En 1985 fundé The Chemical Dependency Centre Ltd., una organización benéfica dedicada a ayudar a las víctimas del alcoholismo y la drogodependencia. Fui su director hasta 2007, cuando la entidad se fusionó con otras dos sociedades benéficas. Desde entonces actúo como principal asesor de la nueva organización.
En 2000 llevé a mis hijos a Uruguay, para que tomaran contacto con el escenario de parte de su historia familiar.

I am English born and bred. My wife, Patricia, comes from an Anglo-Uruguayan family. My son, Christopher, followed father in marrying a Uruguayan girl - a case of history repeating itself. I first visited Uruguay some 30 years ago, fell in love with the country then, and have returned to visit family and friends regularly ever since. My early career was that of a serving police officer. I retired from the Metropolitan Police Service with the rank of inspector. Obviously a late starter, I then decided to go on to university to study law! I am currently qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and, as such, I am due to take up the post of Honorary Treasurer of the Society from Mirta Pither in July 2009.

Nací y me crié en Inglaterra, mientras que Patricia, mi esposa, proviene de una familia anglo-uruguaya. Mi hijo Christopher, siguiendo los pasos de su padre, se casó con una uruguaya. ¡La historia se repite! Viajé por primera vez a Uruguay hace treinta años, me enamoré del país y desde entonces he vuelto regularmente para visitar a familiares y amigos. Inicié mi vida laboral como agente de policía y me retiré del Metropolitan Police Service con el rango de inspector. Decidí entonces embarcarme en estudios universitarios de derecho como estudiante maduro. Actualmente estoy registrado como miembro (fellow) del Institute of Legal Executives y como tal asumiré las funciones de tesorero honorario de la Sociedad en julio de 2009, relevando a Mirta Pither.

Secretary: Mirta Pither
I was born in Uruguay and in 1972 I came to Britain, where I trained as a photographer and worked freelance for some years. In 1982 I married my husband, Richard, and we have two grown-up sons. I was company secretary of my husband’s business for 15 years. I was a member of the British Uruguayan Society committee for more than 10 years before becoming secretary in July 2008. I am also a trustee of the Anglo - Latin American Foundation. I regularly travel to Uruguay to visit family and friends.

Soy uruguaya de nacimiento y vivo en Gran Bretaña desde 1972. Realicé estudios de fotografía en este país, trabajando posteriormente como fotógrafa independiente durante varios años. Me casé con Richard en 1982 y tenemos dos hijos ya adultos. Fui secretaria del directorio de la empresa de mi esposo durante quince años. Integré el comité de la Sociedad Británico – Uruguaya durante diez años y asumí funciones como secretaria en julio de 2008. También soy miembro del Consejo de Administración de la Fundación Anglo-Latinoamericana. Viajo con frecuencia a Uruguay para visitar a familiares y amigos.

My first experience of Uruguay was when, as a young primary school teacher, I travelled (by sea!) to Montevideo in 1970 to embark upon a three-year contract to teach in the junior department of the British Schools. As well as getting to know something of Uruguayan life, I travelled extensively in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. Towards the end of my contract I met and married Beatriz (Galimberti), who was teaching in the senior school. We came to England in January 1974 and I continued the teaching career from which I retired in the summer of 2007, having been head teacher of three state primary schools. In latter years we have been fortunate enough to make regular visits to Uruguay and look forward to spending extended periods there now that I have retired. Of course, given my background, I am particularly interested in the Society's charities which support children and their education.

My primer contacto con Uruguay tuvo lugar cuando en 1970, como joven maestro de primaria, viajé a Montevideo (¡en barco!) con un contrato para trabajar durante tres años en The British Schools. Al tiempo que me familiarizaba con la vida uruguaya, hice varios viajes a Argentina, Bolivia y Perú. Hacia el final de mi contrato conocí a Beatriz (Galimberti), que daba clase en el departamento de secundaria del colegio. Nos casamos y viajamos a Inglaterra en1974, donde continué trabajando como docente hasta jubilarme en el verano de 2007 tras haber sido director de tres escuelas primarias estatales. Recientemente hemos tenido la suerte de poder viajar regularmente a Uruguay y esperamos poder pasar largas temporadas en el país ahora que me he retirado.
Dada mi formación y experiencia profesional, tengo particular interés en las obras benéficas de ayuda a los niños y su educación con las cuales la Sociedad colabora.

My first taste of Uruguay was of gentle, somnolent Colonia where, in early 1989, I sought refuge for a weekend from the heat, racket, power cuts and political tension of Buenos Aires where I was undertaking postgraduate research. Since then, often in connection with links between my university (Sheffield) and the Universidad de la República, Montevideo, I have visited Uruguay many times, establishing firm friendships and pursuing my interest in Uruguayan literature.

Llegué a esta ciudad un fin de semana de principios de 1989 en busca de un refugio donde cobijarme del calor, el bullicio, los apagones y las tensiones políticas de Buenos Aires, donde estaba haciendo estudios de posgrado. He visitado Uruguay varias veces desde entonces, frecuentemente en relación con los vínculos entre mi Universidad (Sheffield) y la Universidad de la República, forjando entrañables amistades y profundizando mi interés en la literatura uruguaya.

Margaret Quigley
My father went out to Uruguay in the thirties to work for a textile company. I had the privilege to be born in Montevideo and live there until 1966, when a chance came for me to come to England. In the same year I married and went down to the Falkland Islands. We came back to England in 1969 and our daughter was born in London. Since we joined the society we have enjoyed and helped with many events. In recent years – together with a group of loyal friends and family – I have organised the Uruguayan food stall for the annual ALAF fair.

Mi padre viajó a Uruguay en la década de los treinta para trabajar en una empresa textil. Yo tuve el privilegio de nacer en Montevideo y vivir allí hasta 1966, cuando tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Inglaterra. En el mismo año me casé y me instalé con mi esposo en las Islas Malvinas. Regresamos a Inglaterra en 1969 y nuestra hija nació en Londres. Desde que nos hicimos socios de la Sociedad hemos asistido a muchos eventos, tomando parte activa en su organización y desarrollo, cosa que hacemos con sumo agrado. En los últimos años, junto con un grupo de leales amigos y parientes, me he encargado de la organización del puesto de venta de comidas de Uruguay en la feria anual de la Fundación Anglo-Latinoamericana.

I was born in Uruguay where I lived until I moved to Washington DC to work for the Inter American Development Bank. In 1973 I married Jeremy Thorp, a British diplomat, and came to live in England. Postings with my husband have included among others Peru and Colombia. I now live permanently in London and work as an interpreter/translator for the Social Services and I travel regularly to Uruguay to visit my family.

En 1973 me casé con Jeremy Thorp, diplomático británico, y nos radicamos en Inglaterra. Los destinos diplomáticos de mi esposo han incluido Perú y Colombia entre otros. Ahora vivo permanentemente en Londres, donde trabajo como intérprete/traductora para los Servicios Sociales. Viajo regularmente a Uruguay para visitar a mi familia.
